Downton Abbey actor Brendan Coyle has told a fan to go "f***" themselves in a foul mouthed tirade on the social networking site.

Having aired his opinions about former Prime Minister Margret Thatcher, a fan then tweeted the actor, commenting that his tweets about the former leader of the country were "beneath him".

It was a comment that Brendan, who plays valet Mr Bates on the hit period drama, didn't take kindly too, telling the fan: "Hard to know how to respond to that... but go f*** yourself feels about right", according to The Sun.

He is thought to have then added: "You have no idea what is beneath me... p.s. go f*** yourself x”

Commenting on the verbal abuse they received from the actor, the fan told the publication:

"He comes across as utterly sweet and gentle then speaks to people like that. I was shocked."

A spokesperson for Brendan has been approached for comment.

Meanwhile, creator of Downton Abbey has hinted at a big screen version of the popular TV drama. Speaking to Digital Spy, the talented writer commented:

"For me it would be difficult to tell the story in more than one medium and I would rather keep the movie until the end of the story, rather like Sex and the City, but not simultaneously because then I think the narrative would get rather messed up, so I think that's probably what we'd do."
