The HMV employee behind the cryptic #hmvXFactorFiring tweets that surfaced on Twitter last week has been named as Poppy Rose Cleere.

On Thursday (Jan 31) the troubled music retailer found itself amongst the micro-blogging site's worldwide trends when HMV online marketing and social media planner Cleere used the company Twitter account to announce that more than 60 employees were on the verge of being fired.

Reading based Cleere later used her own Twitter account to explain the motivation behind her string of tweets, and admitted that it was necessary for someone to speak on behalf of her former colleagues.

“I would apologize for the #hmvXFactorFiring tweets, but I felt like someone had to speak,” she wrote. “As someone without a family to support/no mortgage I felt that I was the safest person to do so.

“Not to mention, I wanted to show the power of social media to those who refused to be educated.”

Cleere – whose HMV career began in 2009 with an internship at the company head office in London – hopes her liberal use of the company Twitter account will help executives understand the importance of social media platforms within a working context.

“Since my internship started, I worked tirelessly to educate the business of the importance of social media – not as a short-term commercial tool, but as a tool to build and strengthen the customer relationship – and to gain invaluable real-time feedbacks from the customers that have kept us going for over 91 years,” she added.

Her online confession concluded with a friendly piece of advice to whoever takes the reigns of the HMV Twitter account following her departure.

“@hmvtweets you need to go to 'settings' and revoke my account access as an admin. I'm still able to switch between accounts,” she wrote.

While her tweets prompted a disgruntled response from HMV, who have since removed them from the account, Cleere's sister Poppy revealed via Twitter that the marketing executive has received numerous job offers as a result of her actions.
