Benedict Cumberbatch looks set to beat 'Great Gatsby' star Leonardo DiCaprio to the role of  genius codebreaker Alan Turing in a new movie based on the exploits of those who helped break the Nazi codes during World War II.

DiCaprio had previously been thought to be a frontrunner for the role in Warner Bros production of Graham Moore's script for 'The Imitation Game', but according to Deadline, Cumberbatch is now in talks to play Turing.

Leo has recently said he'd like to take a break from acting to engage in philanthropic projects, something that may behind the decision of the film's producers to look elsewhere.

Turing was a mathematical genius who helped Britain win the war by helping break the Germans' previously "unbreakable" Enigma code, and is thought by many as the father of modern computing. However his life took a tragic turn after he was convicted of gross indecency in 1952 due to participating in a (then illegal) homosexual relationship.

The previous movie depiction of Bletchley Park's codebreakers, 2001's 'Enigma', drew criticism for writing out Turing's role in the decryption of the German codes, replacing him with a heterosexual character.

Cumberbatch seems to be one of Hollywood's most in demand stars at the moment, playing the villain in 'Star Trek Into Darkness', is currently filming 'The Fifth Estate' a movie in which he plays Julian Assange about the Wikileaks affair, not to mention his role as the voice of the dragon Smaug in the later installments of Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit'.
