Fun. have revealed that Janelle Monae was never their first choice for their smash hit single 'We Are Young' as they originally contacted Rihanna to feature on the guest vocals while they were also in talks with Jay-Z and Kanye West.
The group scooped the Song of the Year award at the Grammys last weekend for the anthem, which became one of the biggest tracks in 2012, but it appears that Janelle might have been lucky to make an appearance on the song as the band admit they had hoped 'Diamonds' hitmaker Rihanna would have agreed to feature.

The song's producer Jeff Bhasker told MTV News that he had reached out to Rihanna to sing on the track but miscommunication meant the collaboration failed to come to fruition. “[fun.] said, 'Who can we get?' And I said, 'Let's get Rihanna',” Bhasker said. “We were shooting for the stars on everything and she was kind of a muse.”
“Someone tried to reach out and I know she heard the song and liked it. But I think some wires just got crossed.” Bhasker also reveals that Jay-Z and Kanye West had considered using the song for their 2011 collaborative record, Watch The Throne, but it fell through at the last minute.
“They were going to rap over the beat but everything gets changed at the last minute,” the producer revealed.
Guess we'll never know if Rihanna's version would have sounded better than Janelle's! Listen to 'We Are Young' below...
