From Good Will Hunting To Gigli To Oscar Glory? Ben Affleck's Rollercoaster Career

From flops with Jennifer Lopez to being an Oscar nominated director

Ben Affleck has had one hell of a career since his introduction to the movie business way back in 1997 with Good Will Hunting. From young Hollywood hotshot to king of flops, the actor turned director has now come full circle with an Academy Award nomination for his film Argo. Ahead of potential glory at tomorrow night's ceremony let's take a look at where it all began...

Sixteen years ago Ben burst onto the Hollywood scene with Good Will Hunting. Both Ben and best mate Matt Damon wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed smash and at the tender age of 25 both won Best Screenplay Oscar for the film.

After an incredible introduction to his career Ben turned action hero, lending his pretty boy looks to box office winners like Armageddon and Pearl Harbour. Although he didn't line his awards cabinet with such casting choices, Ben ensured he remained firmly in the public eye and on Sexiest Men lists worldwide.

Looking back on his choices in the early days, the star recently admitted he sometimes chose jobs for the wrong reasons, telling the Telegraph: "Armageddon was a fun movie and I'm glad I did it. Pearl Harbor I don't feel the same way about. And there are movies that I did for money – for the wrong reasons."

After a stint in rehab, in 2002 Ben's profile rose even higher when he fell in love with Jennifer Lopez and 'Bennifer' was born. The tabloid darlings starred in the now notorious Gigli, which was widely panned by critics and audiences alike. One pink diamond engagement ring later and Ben was soon part of a huge media circus, something he came to regret, admitting afterwards:  "I should never have got engaged. I had to smile for the cameras but really I was in turmoil."

With further flops like Jersey Girl leading to a career downturn, at least Ben's private life was looking up. He met and tied the knot with Jennifer Garner on the set of action film Daredevil in 2003.

Fast forward to 2007 and Ben made his directing debut with Gone Baby Gone, a crime thriller about child abduction starring his little brother Casey before following it up with a critically acclaimed role in The Town.

Three kids later and Ben cemented his place back amongst the Hollywood elite with last year's Argo which has been sweeping the awards season. With widespread outrage that Ben missed out on a Best Director nod, the star is hoping his project will trump the likes of Lincoln and Les Miserables to take home the big one tomorrow night- the Best Picture Oscar.

As his Argo producer partner George Clooney said at the BAFTAS: 'I've got to say Ben, if this is your second act, I don't know what you're going to do for your third act."
