Melissa McCarthy sitcom Mike & Molly is in hot water following a gag made in a recent episode that has been deemed racially offensive.

The Navajo Nation is reportedly livid that the quip was made on the leading prime-time sitcom, which is a critical hit and amasses millions of viewers weekly.

A scene was aired in which the character of Mike's mother said: "Arizona? Why would I move to Arizona? It's nothing but a furnace full of drunk Indians."

A representative for Navajo Nation told TMZ: "For a show like this displaying us in a negative light is just unacceptable, they are taking a shot at the entire state of Arizona and its indigenous people."

They added: "An apology would be the right thing to do, but some damage done can't be fixed in an apology."

McCarthy's star ascended rapidly when she joined the sitcom, which led to offers to star in 'Bridesmaids', for which she was nominated for an Oscar, and 'Identity Thief', which has been a huge hit at the US box office.
