The Great Gatsby has been selected to open the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival in May, it was announced today and which so much hype around Baz Luhrmann's latest project, we've rounded up everything you need to know about the most anticipated film of the year - from Leonardo to Jay-Z!

The search for a leading lady

Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's acclaimed novel depicting 1920's society was announced way back in 2008 but it was two whole years before the director had found his cast and started shooting.

With such a high profile director and beloved American novel, the casting war was rife with a long line of big names up for the principle parts. Rumoured actresses linked to the female protagonist of Daisy Buchanan included the likes of Amanda Seyfried, Rachel McAdams, Keira Knightley, Blake Lively, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Wilde and Scarlett Johansson, phew.

The role eventually went to relative newcomer (at the time) Carey Mulligan who reportedly burst into tears at a red carpet event after learning of her casting via a phone call from the director.

Luhrmann has said of his choice: "I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: 'Hello, Daisy Buchanan.'"

From Ben Affleck to Leonardo DiCaprio

It was then time to find the trio of male leads, Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan. Ben Affleck was initially considered for the latter role before being forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with his now Oscar winning movie Argo. The role then went to Joel Edgerton whilst Tobey Maguire was cast for the role of Nick, the narrator of the story and Leonardo DiCaprio scored the title role, the very first cast part.

An all-star soundtrack

It's not just about the big names on screen though as earlier this year it was confirmed Jay-Z would be providing the film's soundtrack. One of the film's trailers had suggested that the music mogul would be involved as the clip featured the rapper's collaboration with Kanye West, No Church in the Wild before the official confirmation came from Jay's long-time collaborator Jeymes Samuel.

Adelaide Clemens, who plays Catherine in the film, has also recently revealed that fellow big hitters Prince and Lady Gaga will have new songs in the movie.

The (long) road to Cannes

With filming taking place in Luhrmann's home country of Oz (in and around Sydney) shooting wrapped in December 2011 after a relatively speedy four month shoot. Fans have been left hanging though after last September it was announced the release would be moved back from it's original Christmas Day 2012 date to this May.

Will the wait be worth it? We'll let you know in May...
