Fans turned up for the pre-arranged appearance in Chicago, Illinois

Rihanna left thousands of anxious young fans disappointed earlier this week when she turned up three-and-a-half hours late for a pre-arranged appearance at a Chicago school.

The 25-year-old singer – currently working her way through the US leg of her Diamonds World Tour – was expected to appear onstage at Barrington High School in the Illinois city after their video came first in the national Shine Like a Diamond competition.

While pupils at the school were delighted at the prospect of meeting their idol in the flesh, their joy soon turned to dismay when she reportedly kept 2,000 of them waiting in the school gymnasium for more than three hours on Friday (March 22).

As the hours dragged by, many of the waiting kids, teachers and journalists vented their frustration on micro-blogging site Twitter.

“Look like I'm not the only impatient person!! #everyoneisleaving” tweeted one disgruntled fan.

Elsewhere, Barrington Life posted a blog on The Chicago Sun-Times about the unexpected delay.

“Kids are frustrated, hungry, annoyed and are even leaving to go to work,” they wrote.

A live video blog showed the remaining fans whiling away the time by having dance contests – but they were soon rewarded for their patience with a promising tweet from Rihanna.

“On my way to Barrington High School in Chicago! I can't wait to meet these kids man!! They're major inspirational life changes,” she posted.

After arriving at the school in a trendy varsity jacket and pencil skirt, the singer did her best to dodge questions about her tardiness by waxing lyrical about their winning video - and admitted it inspired her to make the appearance, albeit three-hours late.

“I was so impressed and touched seeing the video,” she said. “I wanted to come and express that to you in person.”

Shortly after telling the video's producers to 'keep up the good work,' handing out some obligatory hugs and posing for a few photos she was whisked away to prepare for a concert at the city's United Centre on Saturday (March 23).

In total, her appearance at Barrington High School was 12-minutes long.
