Former Spice Girl replaced the message with a humble apology

Geri Halliwell has been forced to delete a tweet in which she laments the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher following a furious backlash from fans.

Baroness Thatcher passed away after suffering a stroke at the Ritz in London on Monday (April 8), prompting a string of tweets and messages from a range of celebrities – amongst them the former Spice Girl, who expressed her condolences later that day.

“Thinking of our 1st Lady of girl power, Margaret Thatcher, a grocer's daughter who taught me anything is possible...x (sic),' she wrote.

The tweet prompted a string of negative comments from followers who shared a less than enthusiastic opinion of the PM and her policies – amongst them the introduction of poll tax – resulting in Geri's hasty removal of the message, which she replaced with a simple apology.

“I'm sorry if I offended u. X,' she added.

The 40-year-old singer had previously heaped praise on Thatcher at the height of the Spice Girls fame in 1997, shortly before the Tory party were defeated by Tony Blair's new Labour in that year's general election.

“I saw a lot of what Mrs. Thatcher did,” she said at the time. “She was definitely the original Spice Girl rising from the greengrocer's daughter to Prime Minister.”

Despite deleting her tweet, Geri's actions still displeased those who believed she should have stuck to her guns.

“So Geri Halliwell tweeted about the 'first Lady of girl power' and then deleted it after getting some stick? Girl power indeed. #thatcher” wrote one.

However, Geri wasn't alone in taking stick for her warmth towards Thatcher. Former Big Brother star Imogen Thomas also felt the fury of the Twitterati after posting a similar message of condolence.

“Too much backlash for a Monday! This tired head can't deal with it today...” she later tweeted.
