Tom Cruise has opened up for the first time about his shock divorce from Katie Holmes last summert, admitting he hadn't expected his wife of six years to suddenly file for divorce last summer.
It was reported at the time that the 34 year-old had "blindsided" the star last June, when she filed for divorce just days before his 50th birthday, while the Mission Impossible star was filming in Iceland and requested sole custody of their daughter Suri.
Speaking about the break up, Cruise reportedly said during an interview with German TV network ProSieben (via Germany's Bunte magazine): "I did not expect that."
Admitting he'd had to have a "sense of humour," when dealing with such life events he went on: "Life is a challenge. To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you—that's what life is, life is tragicomic.
"You need a certain sense of humour."
Reflecting on the break up, the actor claimed the split had given him "an incredible amount of time to reflect".

The couple managed to settle their divorce just 11 days after the actress filed for legal separation from the big screen legend, keeping details of the settlement private.
Katie retained sole custody of their six year old daughter in the agreement, with Suri living full time with the brunette in New York, with Cruise maintaining "generous" visiting rights.
Following the divorce agreement, the couple issued a joint statement on the split, insisting their daughter comes first.
"We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests," they said last summer.
"We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
