Legendary performer passes away, his daughter confirms

M*A*S*H actor Allan Arbus has passed away at the age of 95.

The legendary thesp, who played Maj. Sidney Freedman on the beloved sitcom, died on Friday, his daughter has confirmed.

Before shooting to fame on the small screen, Arbus worked in military photography for the Army. Co-star Alan Alda had previously joked that he was so convincing in his role that he ended up being an unwilling psychiatrist.

"I was so convinced that he was a psychiatrist I used to sit and talk with him between scenes," Alda said told the Archive of American Television. "After a couple months of that I noticed he was giving me these strange looks, like 'How would I know the answer to that?'"

Arbus went on to star in Cagney and Lacy, Starsky and Hutch, Judging Amy and Curb Your Enthusiasm. He bowed out of the limelight in 2000.

He is survived by his second wife, two daughters from his first marriage and one daughter from his second.
