Demi Lovato has always made it clear that she isn't the biggest party animal these days so it comes as no surprise that she has planned a rather tame – yet adventurous – way to celebrate her 21st birthday next month, deciding to head to a safari park in Africa.
The 'Made in the USA' star is gearing up to turn the big 2-1 on August 20 and while she can no doubt afford to splash out on a lavish bash, Demi has opted to mark the occasion by carrying out philanthropic work with a charity in Africa, in stark contrast to her pal Selena Gomez who celebrated turning 21 on Monday with a weekend of booze-fuelled partying.

“I’m going to do a lot of charity work down there with an organisation called Free The Children,” Demi told Philadelphia's Mix 106.1.
“While I’m there, you have to safari. I wanted to do something different than your typical 21st birthday thing.”
Demi's clean living is mostly a result of her stint in rehab in 2010 where she stayed to battle through emotional and physical issues, but the X Factor USA judge admits that she has enjoyed her fair share of wild parties.

“There was one time, when I was 18. I met this photographer, who was taking pictures for my birthday,” Demi explained. “I met him later… When I went to Jingle Ball two years later, the photographer there was like, ‘Hey, do you remember me? I took pictures for your 21st birthday.’ I was like, ‘Oh, that was not my 21st birthday!'”
“I’ve already had those birthdays. Now that I’ve gotten older and gone to rehab, I’ve learned to celebrate life. I’m so thankful that I’ve even lived to 20 years old, let alone, God bless, if I make it to 21,” Demi added.
