Selena Gomez has opened up about her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber claiming that while they're no longer together she will always care for the star because they share so much history together.

'Jelena' broke up in December last year after more than two years of dating though have been spotted together several times since, causing rumours they're getting back together. But insisting that wasn't the case during an appearance on Good Morning America today, the 20 year-old claimed they were just friends.

Host Sam Champion asked: "You've publicly said you and Justin are not together. How do you maintain friendships with someone that's an ex?"

Gomez replied: "That's because he and I have had such a history together. I'll always care about him and protect him if anyone tries to be mean."

The couple recently celebrated Independence Day in the US together at Justin's Calabasas mansion and posted a loved up snap on Instagram. While Gomez claimed she'll always "protect" her ex she didn't want to comment on his recent bad boy behaviour during a satellite interview and abruptly pulled the plug on it.

Dean Richards, WGN Entertainment reporter, questioned her about his recent antics during the live interview saying: "You're, you know, probably as close a friend to Justin Bieber as they come. Is there something about him that we don't get or we don't understand?"

Gomez looked a little taken aback by the question though it didn't stop Richards persisting as he went on: "I mean, there is one story after another of, you know, pretty outrageous behaviour that we're reading about."

"What don't we get about him or what is it that he's not getting out there?"

Rather than answering the question Gomez simply disappeared from the screen, clearly pulling the plug on any embarrassing situations.
