Amid the excitement over the news that actor Peter Capaldi will become the 12th Doctor Who, bets have now been placed with him being the last actor to play the role of the iconic Time Lord.
Since the news of Matt's departure, speculation was rife over who would replace him and on BBC One last night, all was revealed when 55 year-old Peter stepped out as the new Doctor. Speaking about his new role, the actor, who is famed for his role in The Thick Of It, said:
"It's so wonderful not to keep the secret any longer! For a while I couldn't tell my daughter, who'd be looking on the internet at people saying 'So-and-so should be Doctor Who, so-and-so should be Doctor Who... she was getting rather upset that they never mentioned me!"

However, according to William Hill, Peter's role could be the last played by a man with the bookmakers offering 6/1 odds of a female playing the next role as the Doctor.
Joe Crilly, spokesperson for William Hill commented: "There is a rumour that Peter Capaldi could be the last Doctor but with the show being such a moneyspinner, there is more than a slim chance of at least one more regeneration after Capaldi and next time, it could be a female."
The idea of a woman playing the role isn't new as Dame Helen Mirren recently called for the next Doctor to be female. Speaking to ITV's Daybreak about the rumours that she was linked to the role earlier this year, the iconic actress said:
"I’m not going to be the first female Doctor Who, no, no, no, absolutely not, I absolutely wouldn’t contemplate that...but I do think it’s well over-time to have a female Doctor Who...I think a gay, black female Doctor Who would be the best of all.”
So as the future of who will play the next Doctor Who looks uncertain, we've decided to take a look back and remember the past Doctor's, including William Hartnell, Tom Baker and Christopher Eccleston who have provided endless hours of entertainment for fans over the past 50 years.
