Elysium has managed to claim the number one spot at the North American box office, managing to take home an impressive $30.4 million in its debut week.
The Neil Blomkamp movie features Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, beat off competition from We’re The Millers as well as Planes but has been compare to District 9, which was Blomkamps hit movie which did not feature an A-list cast and still managed to take $37.4 million at the box office, so some feel that it has not matched this success.
David Mumpower of Boxofficeprophets.com has said, according to AceShowbiz: "What is troubling is that the addition of bona fide A-list talents ... added nothing to the bottom line of Elysium's box-office potential.”
But Elysium marks a triumphant return to movies for Matt Damon, who was yet to make a real impact following his departure from the Bourne franchise.
"Audiences ... love seeing Matt Damon vs. the world," Jeff Bock, vice president of Exhibitor Relations, reportedly said.
Jennifer Aniston, hardly known for her movie success, will be popping the champagne as her movie, We’re The Millers has come in at second place, taking approximately $26.6 million. Some movie experts claim that the “appealing cast” and the release date also played a part in the movie’s success.
To round up the top five, Warner Bros. latest comedy Planes managed to get in at number three, while Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters was placed at number 4 bringing in $14.6 million.
Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington’s latest movie 2 Guns, in which he stars opposite Mark Wahlberg has dropped to fifth place.
