Having scored her first ever UK number one with 'Burn', it's looking likely that Ellie Goulding could spend a third consecutive week on the top spot.

'Burn,' which is lifted from the repackaged version of the star's album 'Halcyon Days,' has fought off the challenge from her closest rival Avicii's 'Wake Me Up', which still sits at number two, according to the midweek chart update.

Sales figures revealed that just 4,500 sales are separating 'Burn' and 'Wake Me Up', which already spent three weeks at the top before being dethroned by Miley Cyrus’ 'We Can’t Stop'.

The 26-year-old singer though looks set to bag another week on the top spot, and the star could also have some success over in the album charts having released a repackaged version of her 'Halcyon' album, 'Halcyon Days'.

The album features seven brand new tracks, it includes the hit singles ‘Anything Could Happen’, ‘Explosions’ and the Calvin Harris track ‘I Need Your Love’ featuring Ellie. The record also features collaborations with Madeon, DJ Fresh and BURNS.

It's looking like a good end to the year for Ellie, having bagged her first ever UK number one, selling out her UK tour and the blonde beauty also won the Radio 1 Best Performance of the Summer award yesterday. The star will also play three big arena shows in March next year.

But elsewhere in the midweek charts update, 'Sonnentanz (Sun Don't Shine)' by Klangkarussell remains firm at number three, but could well challenge Avicii for his number second spot. Rizzle Kicks are this week's highest new entry at four with 'Lost Generation'.

Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais are at five with 'Summertime Sadness' and former Westlife star Shane Filan begins at seven with his solo debut 'Everything To Me'.

Richard & Adam have been top of the album charts for four weeks (WENN)

Over on the charts album, Ellie's revamped album 'Halcyon Days' sits at three but it looks likely that the top five could be composed entirely of new entries, finally bringing an end to Richard and Adam's reign at the top, as they sit at number six.

The top spot is occupied by US rockers Avenged Sevenfold with their new record 'Hail To The King'. Naughty Boy is just behind at two with his debut album 'Hotel Cabana'. Bob Dylan's 'Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)' starts at number four and Franz Ferdinand are at five with 'Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action'.
