Jay Z needed to work hard to impress Beyoncé because the singer was reportedly not at all taken by his superstar status.
Jay had to pull all the stops out to try and romance the 'Halo' singer when they first started dating, revealing he had to "wine and dine" her to get a chance to know her better.
The rapper reminisces when they shared the cover of Vanity Fair's 2001 Music Issue, recalling: "We were just beginning to try to date each other. Well, you know, you've got to try first. You got to dazzle ... wine and dine."
However it seems the couple are deeply in love now and their relationship has definitely grown with the birth of their daughter Blue-Ivy back in 2012.
The pair secretly wed in April 2008 however Beyoncé would have still dated him even if he wasn't famous so long as he remained cool.

"If I'm as cool as I am, yes. But she's a charming Southern girl, you know, she's not impressed ... But I would have definitely had to be this cool," he told VF.
Jay Z claims his wife - who has always had a good girl image, starting when she was a member of Destiny's Child - has been influenced by his lifestyle, jokingly saying "she's gangsta now".
The Roc Nation boss recently questioned Forbes magazine's claims that he has an estimated net worth of $500 million. The 'Magna Carter Holy Grail' singer claims he would rather stay silent on his fortune.
He said: "I'm not motivated by that ... I don't sit around with my friends and talk about money, ever. On a record, that's different."
The couple first started dating in 2001 and in November's issue of Vanity Fair, the rapper even addressed the controversy surrounding Beyoncé's pregnancy and rumors that she gave birth via surrogate.
"It's just so stupid," he said. "You know, I felt dismissive about it, but you've got to feel for her. I mean, we've got a really charmed life, so how can we complain? But when you think about it, we're still human beings."
