Justin Timberlake's new album The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2 has peaked at number one in the US – despite getting a less than favourable critical response.

The second part of Timberlake's ambitious musical odyssey was released on September 27, but while the first album fared well both critically and commercially, 2 of 2 has been savaged for its self-indulgence, lack of focus and 'phony angst.'

Despite the generally unfavourable reaction, the album enters the US chart at number one after selling an impressive 350,000 copies in its first week.

Significantly, Timberlake is the only artist this year to sell 300,000 copies of two different albums over the course of a week.

He is also the second artist to score two number ones, the first being country star Luke Bryan.

Timberlake made a welcome return to music after a seven-year hiatus in March with The 20/20 Experience, an album that won him warm praise and a series of hits in lead single Suit & Tie – featuring Jay Z – and Mirrors, a track inspired by his marriage to actress Jessica Biel.

The 32-year-old singer and actor will hit the road to promote the two records in the new year.
