Mariah Carey recently had some harsh things to say about her time on American Idol, telling Hot 97 radio host Angie Martinez that she "hated" doing the show and likening it to "going to work in hell everyday with Satan."

The songstress didn't elaborate on what--or who--made her time on the reality show hellish, but most assumed it was fellow judge Nicki Minaj, who Mariah had a much talked about feud with during the show.

However, Mariah's husband, Nick Cannon, is insisting that his wife wasn't talking about Nicki--or anyone in particular--when she made those comments.

"I don't think she was speaking directly about [Nicki]," Nick told Access Hollywood. "I think she was talking about the situation in general."

Nick went on to explain that if his wife wanted to insult Nicki, she would have had no problem naming her directly.

"If my wife wanted to [call Nicki Satan], she would've said that," he said. "She has no problem [saying] how she feels!"

In her radio interview, Mariah claimed that she had no clue that Nicki would be added to the judging panel when she signed on to do the show.

"Here's what it was. I was the first person who signed on," she told the radio host on Tuesday. "I thought it was going to be a three-person panel...But it wasn't that."

Nick, who has been married to Mariah for over five years, says that his wife was upset when she learned that she wouldn't be the only female judge on the panel, which also included country singer Keith Urban and longtime judge Randy Jackson.

"[Mariah] was like, 'You said it was going be this, and then it turned out to be this.' From that point on, it was just bad," Nick said.

Mariah and Nicki will not return as judges for the show's upcoming 13th season. The new judging panel will feature Keith Urban, singer Harry Connick Jr. and singer Jennifer Lopez, who will return after a one-season absence.
