Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge might be a modern royal, decked out in high street for several of her occasions but last night it was old school princess style as she headed to a diplomatic reception thrown by the Queen at Buckingham Palace last night in a priceless diamond tiara, that used to belong to the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret.

The Duchess, 31, was driven to the Palace in one of the Queen's Bentleys alongside her husband, who looked dapper in tails, with the brunette reportedly donning a custom Alexander McQueen gown for the event as well as the bejewelled head piece. Check it out here.

Kensington Palace confirmed the tiara was one once owned by Princess Margaret and was borrowed by Kate for the royal occasion. It's the first time we've seen the brunette wear the traditional royal headpiece since her royal wedding in 2011. Then she was loaned one of the queen's tiaras for the special day.

The lavish reception is thrown by the Queen each year in honour of the 172 Foreign Missions currently accredited to the Court of St James in London. Senior members of the royal family gather to welcome the dignitaries and for the first time included the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

According to eye-witnesses Kate wasn't too intimidated by the occasion and turned on the royal charm for the guests.

"It's one of the most glamorous events of the year," a guest reportedly told E! News, "Kate was smiling as usual, looking good. She was well-composed. She looked really good, and really comfortable,"

"William was right next to her ([in the car when they arrived]" and was a bit "camera shy."
