Confirming his first guest as blockbuster star Smith he said: “He’s a big Hollywood star and he always brings it every time he goes on a talk show.”

Speaking about how he felt about taking over the reigns from Jay Leno, who made his debut on The Tonight Show in 1987 and has worked as its host on and off since then, Fallon said: “Well, we’re skipping a lot of generations, but it means a lot to me. It’s surreal and it’s an honour."

"I don’t want to let anyone down," Fallon continued. "I want them to know that I’m going to work as hard as I can. And I know how much the show means and I’m a big fan of television. This is an important job and I’m so looking forward to it. And I just want to make everyone laugh.”

Fallon, who scored his first talk show host in 2008, succeeding Conan O'Brien as host of NBC's Last Night, insisted he hadn't "gunned" for Leno's chair and described how he was called up by the legendary host about the gig.

“This was going to be the year, and I’d love for you to be the next guy," the host claimed Leno told him.

The new host is mixing up the famous show's format including moving it from Los Angeles to New York and changing the name from The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
