Greek state television has been blasted for omitting a gay kiss from an episode of Downton Abbey.

The British hit, which airs on the NET channel in Greece, showed a smooch between footman Thomas Barrow and a visiting duke in its recent episode.

The country's opposition party said the decision was "an extreme act of homophobia and discrimination which... we cannot characterize as unprecedented."

But Costas Spyropoulos, managing director of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, defended the edit.

"The love affair between the two men... was not censored," he said. "The kiss was not shown because of the time the programme was broadcast and the corresponding parental guidance warnings."

BBC News adds that there has been a rise in hate crime in the country, thanks largely to the unemployment that arose from the faltering economy.

In the UK, Downton remains one of the most popular shows on TV. On Sunday night it replaced The X Factor as the country's most-watched show.
