Yoko Ono Announced As Guest Director Of Meltdown Festival

Artist and musician Yoko Ono is the latest celebrity to be announced as a guest director of the Southbank Centre’s yearly Meltdown festival.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the widow of The Beatles legend John Lennon, will be working with Meltdown on the festivals twentieth anniversary year.

Ono said: "I am deeply honoured to curate the world-famous Meltdown Festival. In doing so I am aware of the great tradition of experimentalism mixed with classicism that has made the festival such an enduring part of the British arts landscape."

Previously the festival has managed to attract internationally known names in music as well as art, Yoko wants to focus on upcoming acts and iconic names.

"I am now starting to approach names from all over the world, some of whom you will know and some who might be new to your world. Let the fun begin!" she said.

Yoko Ono will be following in the footsteps of Antony Hegarty, the lead singer of Anthony and the Johnsons who directed this years festival where the line featured Boy George, Marc Almond and Marina Abramovich.

Other iconic artists who have guest directied Meltdown include Jarvis Cocker, Morrissey and David Bowie.

Paul McCartney recently jumped to the defence of Yoko One claiming she has no influence on the end of The Beatles.

Fans of the legendary band have always blamed Yoko for The Beatles split but McCartney has cleared up these rumours.

The Guardian gained access to transcripts from a revealing interview with David Frost which will be aired this month.

Speaking to Frost, McCartney said: "She certainly didn't break the group up, the group was breaking up. When Yoko came along, part of her attraction was her avant garde side, her view of things, so she showed him another way to be, which was very attractive to him.

"So it was time for John to leave, he was definitely going to leave one way or another."
