Yesterday, Channing Tatum was anointed People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, but how exactly did the actor get to win the accolade when not long ago few had heard of the former stripper?
Given that the mag has only once chosen a non-actor, the list can be seen as effectively a list of who People think is hot in Hollywood, and it seems that
Jessica Coen, the editor-in-chief of Jezebel told The Daily Beast that the accolade wasn't the, “sexiest man in general, just—‘handsome man who’s getting the most work right now’”.
Now Channing is a good-looking fella, and has done rather well at the box-office, with '21 Jump Street', 'The Vow' and 'Magic Mike' all doing making decent amounts, but many expected the title to go to Hollywood royalty like Ryan Gosling rather than the upstart.
The list of former winners is basically a who's who of Hollywood leading men, although most were bigger stars than Tatum is currently when they won. Johnny Depp has won twice, while Matt Damon and George Clooney nabbed the accolade when they were at the height of their popularity as leading men.
However it seems that the last of those films, Magic Mike seems to have sealed his spot as People's sexiest bloke.
But it wasn't just the fact that Channing got oiled up and got his manhood out that will have sealed his spot - drawing on his own experiences as a stripper the movie also received a decent amount of acclaim and shot him from promising Hollywood newcomer to outright star.
Of course stripping off and showing his almighty torso won't have done the actor any harm either, and so stripping off and yet not inviting ridiculed for it proved the perfect recipe to allow Channing Tatum to rise to be named the world's sexiest man.
'Magic Mike' is released on DVD on November 26.
