President Barack Obama has sparked the controversy surrounding YouTube sensation Psy, after shaking hands with the rapper despite outrage against his controversial anti-American lyrics.

The 'Gangnam Style' rapper performed at a 'Christmas In Washington' concert on Sunday night where he was greeted with a firm handshake from the President, who ignored pleas from angry US citizens to boycott the concert.

While Obama refused to perform a little rendition of Psy's now famous "horse" dance, the US president did acknowledge the troops, who have been fighting on behalf of the country in the Middle East - perhaps a dig back at Psy whose controversial lyrics encouraged listeners to "kill them all slowly and painfully."

"Yes, tonight is about Conan and Diana Ross and Santa and all the other talented folks on this stage," Obama said in his speech at the concert.

"But it’s also about the Americans who are spending this holiday in a hospital bed, or a shelter, or protecting our freedom on a battlefield far from home."

"Let’s keep them in our prayers, and follow Christ’s calling to love one another as He has loved all of us."

Psy shocked fans last week when a previous rap he had written emerged online, in which he blasted the US troops for invading Iraq.

"Kill those f**king Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives," Psy raps.

"Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law and fathers. Kill them all slowly and painfully."

Psy was forced to apologise for his offensive lyrics, saying in a statement to The NY Daily News: "While it’s important that we express our opinions, I deeply regret the inflammatory and inappropriate language I used to do so."

Psy's success in both the US and overseas has increased dramatically in the last year following the release of his smash hit single 'Gangnam Style' whose music video has become the most watched video in YouTube's history with more than 920 million views.
