It may have not quite received the lavish praise of Peter Jackson's original 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, but 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' may win an impressive accolade, by becoming the biggest Christmas movie of all time!

Deadline.com reports sources as suggesting that the Middle-earth epic, based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien looks set to have earned $37m in the US yesterday and $96m over the weekend.

This means that for this specific weekend it will have the biggest opening ever, beating 'I Am Legend's' $77m. It also looks set to beat 'The Return of the King's' $72m, making it one of the movies with the biggest weekend over the Christmas period ever.

The film's takings will likely drop below that of 'Lord of the Rings' final installment next week, but with fans watching the movie in the more expensive High Frame Rate 3D format and in IMAX cinemas it could hold up well enough to become the biggest grossing films ever opening in close proximity to the festive season.

The movie also looks set to end the weekend with an incredible $200m worldwide by the end of the weekend.
