Comedian Jim Davidson was arrested and taken into custody today by detectives investigating the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal.

The 59-year-old was one of two men held on suspicion of sexual offences as part of Operation Yewtree.

The unnamed second man, aged 53, was arrested in Hampshire at 8am and taken to a police station to be quizzed.

According to the Mail Online, Davidson was detained at London's Heathrow airport after flying into the country today ahead of a planned appearance on Celebrity Big Brother, which begins tomorrow night.

The star "vigorously denies" the claims against him according to a statement released by the comedian's solicitor.

While the allegations are not directly linked to the disgraced former TOTP presenter, Scotland Yard are leading a national investigation into allegations against Savile and several other high-profile personalities.

The inquiry has been separated into three strands: claims against Savile, those involving Savile and others, and those involving others, with the latest arrests falling under the "others" strand.

Police have questioned 10 people including former pop star Gary Glitter, PR guru Max Clifford and comedian Freddie Starr.

Last month police said a total of 31 allegations of rape had been made against Savile and 589 people have come forward with information relating to the scandal, with 450 complaints against the BBC presenter and DJ, mainly alleging sexual abuse.
