Doctor Who star Matt Smith may have passed on his duties to Peter Capaldi as the new Time Lord but according to latest reports, the British heartthrob is set to make a return to the popular sci-fi drama – but only as a special cameo.

The 31-year-old actor, who played the 11th incarnation of Doctor Who, has reportedly agreed to take on the role.

A TV insider told the Mirror: “Doctor Who’s sidekick Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, is struggling to accept that Capaldi is still her Doctor when she receives a phone call from Matt, which he made prior to his regeneration.

“It sounds confusing but he is ringing the future from the past and wants to assure Clara this new man is still Doctor Who.”

This news comes after Smith recently became the first Doctor to be nominated for a BAFTA, which has had show bosses enter into an agreement to get him back, reports Daily Mail.

Fans of the show will have seen the actor play the lead role since 2009 and then regenerate into Capaldi at the end of the 2013 Christmas special.

Matt recently spoke about the Christmas special and revealed how time consuming it was to shoot the regeneration scene. He told fans at New Orleans Comic Con: "I was quite surprised to see that was the take they used, cause I didn’t think – I thought that they might use something else, because we did a lot of different takes and we did a lot of different versions of that ending, and a lot of them were really troubling, and I quite liked them.

"I’m going to get in trouble now from them, 'Why are you talking about Doctor Who when you’ve left?'."
